Stone Tools

Aleutian raw materials are rather bleak. Many of the tools made were probably organic (bone, ivory). When stone was used for tools the selection was often rather poor. This meant that stones with poor crystalline structures had to be used for knapping. This stone doesn’t flake well so only clunky objects like many of the ones seen here can be made.
The collection that I’m familiar with which has crude tools like these is from Attu.
Eventually people in this area turned to using slate for making tools. This material can be ground to have a sharp edge rather than being flaked like the conventional stone tool. This is commonly how non-metal ulus are made.
