The Turning Point

The Turning Point

Last evening, Barack Obama won the Presidential election in a manner Democrats hardly ever do. Not only did he carry the loyal blue states, he added perennial republican strongholds like Virginia, Colorado, and Nevada. This robust showing surprised a lot of individuals, even the most optimistic of Obama supporters. In addition to Obama’s likeability, campaign organization, and calm judgment McCain’s poor decision of a running mate helped create an election which became virtually not possible for him to win.

Several contend that a single of McCain’s strategic errors in this election was moving too far to the right soon after the Republican primaries. This strategy undermined McCain’s underlying explanation for his relative popularity: his centrist views. Even so, swiftly recognizing that some conservatives have been unhappy with his stances on specific concerns, he pursued to paint himself as a typical conservative. To bolster his image with portions of far-proper rural America, he chose the small-identified governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin as his operating mate.

Not only did this selection hurt his claim of expertise, it showed a comprehensive lack of judgment. Taking into consideration his age, McCain would be naïve to consider his operating mate wouldn’t have the enormous duty of understanding the workings of the American government, which she could potentially run. Lauded by conservatives, McCain strategists had been glad to see their candidate ahead in polls right after her choice. Even so, this honeymoon period was brief-lived as the economy spiraled downward in mid-September, and the polls after again began to favor the Democratic candidate. To compound McCain’s perceived weakness on the economy was his proclamation that “the fundamentals of our economy are strong.” Disregarding the validity of the statement, these words couldn’t come at a worse time: just hours ahead of the Wall Street meltdown.

Obama’s election was not due to McCain’s errors, or just his eloquent and believed-provoking speeches, it was his guarantee of hope and alter at a time when Americans most necessary it.
