MakerBot – 3D printer – Interchangeagble build platform<\/strong>

This video shows a simple proof of concept regarding a 3D printer build platform designed at our Geekubator.org hackerspace.<\/p>\n

The aim of the project is to make a build platform (here demonstrated on a MakerBot Thing-O-Matic) which is easy to remove from the 3D printer and facilitates the removal of the 3D printed part by the pealing principle.<\/p>\n

The base of the platform is made out of a 3 mm thick aluminium plate. It has twelve 10 mm holes in which 2.5 mm thick high-strength neodymium magnets are placed. The plate is screwed onto the heated build platform of the 3D printer.<\/p>\n

The removable part of the build platform is made out of 0.6 mm flexible steel sheet. It is strong enough to resist any warping from the stress of the 3D printed plastic model, but flexible enough to be held down firmly by the magnets and to bend and be peeled of from the printed plastic model. <\/p>\n

Normally 3D printed models with large bottom surface are difficult to be removed from a build stiff build plate, resulting in high stress on the 3D printers build plate structure when one tries to bend it off. In other cases one tends to use sharp blades wedged between the model and the build plate, which tends to damage the heat resistant Kapton tape.<\/p>\n

The flexibility of this thin, removable build plate makes it much easier to remove the 3D printed plastic model without damaging the Kapton surface.<\/p>\n

\nThis is a 3d-printed base for a puppet-head with movable eyelids. The 3d-model was not made for a specific purpose, so I decided to release it for free.<\/p>\n

\nThe 3d-model is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (see creativecommons.org\/licenses\/b\u2026).<\/p>\n

The head-base can be used to build a puppet-, plushie-, robot- or even a fursuit-head (you have to scale it). Fake fur can be glued on.
\nI did not include the lower jaw because It’s faster (and cheaper) to make one with an aluminium-profile when to print it.<\/p>\n

Tioh_Fursuit_Head 7_onepart.stl is the complete model – I recommend printing the 3 parts. It can be printed without support-material.<\/p>\n
