{"id":478,"date":"2014-03-22T15:56:28","date_gmt":"2014-03-22T07:56:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cncmachinings.com\/engineering-coursework-help-about-milling-machines\/"},"modified":"2014-05-23T08:20:23","modified_gmt":"2014-05-23T00:20:23","slug":"engineering-coursework-help-about-milling-machines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cncmachinings.com\/blog\/engineering-coursework-help-about-milling-machines\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering coursework help about milling machines?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Question by MattN: Engineering coursework help about milling machines :(?<br \/>\nParameters<br \/>\nDepth of cut and cutter type for roughing and finishing cuts<br \/>\nPosition of workpiece \u2013 datum point<br \/>\nSafety cut out<br \/>\nGuards<\/p>\n<p>Information and explanations regarding these?<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your help people \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Best answer:<br \/>\nAnswer by WingmanI am guessing your are talking about a CNC mill?<br \/>\nI have no experience with one, although I wish I did.<\/p>\n<p>On a manual mill, for a datum point, I use an edge finder and locate the left hand edge of the<br \/>\nStationary jaw on the milling vise.<\/p>\n<p>Once located, I zero out the X axis Digital Read Out \/ DRO.<br \/>\nThen I lower table till the edge finder will clear the top of the vise jaws,<br \/>\nmove the table to the left 1\/2 of the edge finder diameter.<br \/>\nThen zero out the X axis display again.<\/p>\n<p>This makes the left hand corner on the stationary vise jaw X = 0.000<\/p>\n<p>I do the same thing for the inside edge of the same vise jaw to make Y = 0.000<\/p>\n<p>Most work pieces I work with, fit into the vise.<\/p>\n<p>My DRO map\/ drawings are based on the top left hand corner on the work piece.<\/p>\n<p>For round work like bolt circles, I work off of the center point of the work piece.<\/p>\n<p>That work piece is lightly center punched, clamped to the mill table and a pointed<br \/>\nedge finder is used to locate the circle center.<br \/>\nThe X and Y axis on the DRO are then zeroed out to make the center point of the<br \/>\nwork piece X = 0.000 and Y = 0.000<\/p>\n<p>For depth of cut, a lot depends on the physical size of the mill,<br \/>\nthe physical condition of the mill,<br \/>\nthe rigidity of the clamping of the work piece,<br \/>\navailable mill horse power,<br \/>\nsize of the cutter\/ diameter,<br \/>\nnumber of flutes on the cutter,<br \/>\nwhat I am using for coolant.<br \/>\nwhat material the work piece is made of\/ steel, aluminum, exotic<\/p>\n<p>A good rule of thumb is depth of cut to not to exceed cutter diameter.<br \/>\nThis can vary again by all the above mentioned items.<\/p>\n<p>For the traveling speed of the milling cutter, I do the math and try to keep the chip<br \/>\nthickness to 0.010 inches or less.<\/p>\n<p>Safety cut out, the mills I have worked with are all world war two or earlier and do not<br \/>\nhave a safety cut out.<\/p>\n<p>Guards are usually just clear PVC plastic.
