dge take-up, specially large crank and wrist pins and cast-steel cross headswith adjustable babbitted slippers, top and bottom, working inbored guides. The reciprocating motion is of the simplest possiblecharacter, this simplicity in construction permitting low recipro-cating weights without sacrifice of strength. These features allowsatisfactory balancing, and, in connection with the long bearing onthe foundations, insure an especially easy-running machine. Thesteam valve gear is of the four-valve type. Steam distribution iseffected by means of short, double-ported, slide valves, working ateither end of the steam chest on a valve face as close as possibleto the cylinder bore, the port volume being restricted as far as thelarge valve area will allow. The exhaust valves are of the Corlissrotary type and are placed at the bottom of the cylinder. This con-struction has been followed in order to produce a valve gear havingthe essential advantages of a Corliss, namely separate passages for

The air valve gear is, however, the distinguishing feature of thismachine, combining in a very ingenious manner the positive action, noiseless operation and durability of the mechanically-moved valvewith the elasticity of the poppet valve. The noise and rapid w-earof the poppet valve, due to the impact of the valves closing at thereversal of stroke, is eliminated by mechanically closing the passagesimderneath the poppet valve, and leaving a cushion of air uponwhich the latter seats. The three fixed points in the compressioncycle, namely the opening of the inlet, the closing of the inlet, andthe closing of the discharge, are positively and mechanically con-trolled; the opening of the discharge, which is the only vari

iator type transformer, so arranged with openings placedbetween the radiators to direct the flow <<i air supplied by amotor driven blower. With this method of artificial cooling, these maximumrated transformers will carry 25 per cent overload continuous-ly with the same winding temperatures as at full load with-out artificial circulation of air. The transformer is provided with a hot spot temperat-ure indicator, an oil expansion tank and a high voltage tapchanger, the latter operated by a hand wheel in a convenientposition above the transformer cover. nozzle for directing the liow ot air. Lonnected with thelighting circuit, the machine is set in operation by means ofa foot lever in the base of the standard. Pressing the leverdownward causes warm air to be discharged through thenozzle. Releasing the lever stops the motor and the flowof air. This machine is adjustable to any position. It issaid to dry thoroughly. It is safe and sanitary and eliminatestowels. It is paricularly adaptable to public washrooins.factories, etc. A Portable Wringer .nother labor-saving device under the trade nameWring-O is being placed on the market by the PetroleumEngine and Manufacturing China Co., 120 Broadway, New York. This is an electrical wringer of the portable type, as shown. able at the moment to bear the full expense. It is claimed, also, that an efficient washing may be accomplished bythoroughly soaking the clothes in soapy water an thenwringing and rinsing through several waters until clearwater is wrung from them. It would seem to be speciallyuseful i
